ABOUT

About this spot

The "Sesshu Garden" of Joei-ji in Yamaguchi City is a historic famous garden said to have been designed by Sesshu, a Muromachi-period ink painter, at the request of the feudal lord Ouchi clan. The garden is surrounded by mountains on three sides and uses the "borrowed scenery" technique, bringing the natural backdrop into the composition. Powerful stone arrangements are scattered around the central "Shinji Pond," and you can feel a simple, vigorous Zen spirit, as if you have stepped into one of Sesshu's ink paintings. Sitting on the veranda of the main hall and looking at the garden, you can enjoy different faces in each season: fresh spring greenery, deep summer green, vivid autumn colors and the quiet snow scenes of winter. It is an ideal spot for solo travelers wanting to forget daily busyness and refresh body and mind in a quiet space, and for families and friends who want to enjoy traditional Japanese beauty at leisure. Please experience this blissful space where silence and beauty resonate, a must when visiting Yamaguchi.
