ABOUT
About this spot
Rurikoji Temple, a symbol of Yamaguchi Prefecture, is widely known for its Five-Story Pagoda, built around 1442 (Kakitsu 2). Designated a National Treasure, this masterpiece of architecture is counted among Japan's three most celebrated pagodas, alongside those of Daigoji Temple in Kyoto and Horyuji Temple in Nara. Often hailed as the finest achievement of Ouchi culture, which flourished at the height of the Ouchi clan's power, it conveys the superb building techniques of the mid-Muromachi period to this day. In Kozan Park, where the temple grounds spread out, you can enjoy the beauty of the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall, and the striking contrast with the pagoda captivates visitors. After sunset the pagoda is illuminated every evening, and its silhouette rising from the darkness is truly enchanting. It is a wonderful spot for history lovers, for those who enjoy strolling with a camera, and for solo travelers seeking quiet time. Nearby tea houses serve famous Yamaguchi sweets, so you can savor slowly passing time while feeling the breath of history.
