ABOUT
About this spot
The "White-Walled Townscape" in the center of Yanai City is a precious area that preserves the layout of a medieval town. Along a street about 200 meters long stand merchant houses with beautiful white plaster walls and lattice windows, and in 1984 it was designated a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The town's symbol is the "Kingyo Chochin" (goldfish lantern), a local folk craft. Displayed under the eaves all year round, not just in summer, the red goldfish swaying in the breeze are a popular photo spot. Nearby is "Yanai Nishigura," a converted soy sauce warehouse, where you can try making goldfish lanterns and weaving Yanai-jima cloth. There are also many other sights that convey the depth of history, such as the historic merchant house "Kunimori Residence." Calm cafes and souvenir shops dot the area, making it a perfect place for friends, families, or solo travelers to stroll at leisure and lose track of time.
