ABOUT

About this spot

Hofu Tenmangu is a historic shrine counted as one of Japan's "Three Great Tenjin Shrines," alongside Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka. Founded in 904 (Engi 4), it is known as the first Tenjin shrine ever built in Japan. As a sacred place of learning dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, it bustles with students and families during exam season. Beautiful vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings line the spacious grounds, which show different faces in every season. The plum blossoms in spring, autumn foliage, and winter snow scenery are especially lovely. Unique traditional events are also carefully preserved to this day, such as the Gojinko-sai (Hadakabo Festival), known as one of the wildest festivals in western Japan. After your visit, we recommend the tea house "Hosho-an" on the grounds. You can enjoy matcha and seasonal Japanese sweets while overlooking a beautiful Japanese garden, forgetting the bustle of daily life and spending a peaceful moment. From history lovers to families and solo travelers, this is a must-see attraction when visiting Yamaguchi Prefecture.
