ABOUT

About this spot

Tsunoshima Lighthouse stands at the northwestern end of Tsunoshima Island in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is a historic lighthouse first lit in the 9th year of Meiji (1876). Designed by Richard Henry Brunton, known as the "father of Japanese lighthouses," its solid stone beauty is stunning. The highlight is the superb view from the observation deck at the top of the narrow 105-step spiral staircase. You can see a 360-degree view of the cobalt-blue Sea of Japan, the beautiful Tsunoshima Bridge connecting the island, and the island's lush scenery. The surrounding area is developed as a lighthouse park, where you can enjoy a stroll. Another feature is the chance to see up close a precious first-order lens, said to be one of only two in Japan. At dusk a romantic scene of the sunset spreads, making it very popular as a date spot as well as for trips with friends and family. Be sure to visit this landmark of Yamaguchi Prefecture, where history and nature are in harmony.
