ABOUT

About this spot

Kintai Bridge, the symbol of Iwakuni City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a wooden bridge representing Japan, first built in 1673. Its unique structure of five connected arches is extremely rare even by world standards, and the intricate joinery on the underside, assembled with almost no nails, is a must-see. The geometric beauty seen looking up from beneath the bridge speaks of the advanced construction techniques of the time. The scenery of the four seasons is another major attraction, with cherry blossoms filling the riverbank in spring, traditional cormorant fishing on the Nishiki River in summer, fiery autumn foliage, and quiet snowscapes in winter, so you can enjoy spectacular views all year round. The nighttime illumination shows the bridge rising out of the dark in a fantastical form. Beyond the bridge are the historic Kikko Park and Iwakuni Castle, as well as a famous shop offering over 100 kinds of soft serve ice cream, with plenty of sights and food. It is a perfect weekend outing spot for those who want to enjoy a history walk and slowly passing time.
