ABOUT

About this spot

Hinoyama Park, one of the leading sightseeing attractions of Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture, sits atop 268-meter Mt. Hinoyama, overlooking the Kanmon Straits. From the observation deck at the summit, you can enjoy a dynamic panorama that takes in the Kanmon Bridge, Kitakyushu's Moji Port on the opposite shore, and even Hibiki Sea. The night view from here in particular is praised as the "ten-million-dollar night view" and has even been certified as a Japan Night View Heritage site. In spring, cherry blossoms and tulips make it a beloved park for local residents, but use of the park, including the tulip garden, is currently restricted due to redevelopment work. The site also has a history as a wartime gun battery location, and the stone fort ruins that remain today can be visited as a nationally designated historic site. For access, a driveway runs to the summit, and a new gondola, the "Pulse Gondola," is being developed to replace the ropeway (expected to open in or after fiscal 2026). A scenic spot for a wide range of visitors, it is great for weekend dates, photography, and historical strolls.
