ABOUT

About this spot

Located in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, the Hagi Castle Ruins (Shizuki Park) mark the seat of the Mori clan, a 360,000-koku domain that Mori Terumoto established after the Battle of Sekigahara. Because it sits at the foot of Mt. Shizuki, the castle is also known as Shizuki Castle. Parts of its stone walls and moat remain today, and the site is designated a National Historic Site. In 2015 it was also inscribed as a World Heritage Site, as a component of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." In spring, about 600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees burst into bloom, making it one of the best cherry blossom spots in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and the park fills with visitors during the hanami season. Historic remains such as Manzai Bridge are scattered throughout the park. It is especially recommended to combine a visit with a stroll through the old streets of the castle town. Walk slowly through the quiet grounds and see if you can sense the lingering atmosphere of the era when the patriots of the late Edo period raced through history.
