ABOUT

About this spot

Shimonoseki Aquarium Kaikyokan is an aquarium you can enjoy together with the dynamic scenery of the Kanmon Strait spreading out right before your eyes. The top highlight is the display of fugu (pufferfish), Shimonoseki's famous specialty. This is the only place in the world where you can see more than 100 species of pufferfish gathered from around the globe swimming together. At "Penguin Village," one of Japan's largest penguin exhibit facilities, you will be charmed by gentoo penguins that seem to fly through a giant 6-meter-deep tank and Humboldt penguins that can be observed outdoors in near-natural surroundings. At the "Aqua Theater," held against the backdrop of the Kanmon Strait, dolphins and sea lions perform in perfect harmony, and both adults and children are sure to be captivated. Inside there are also tunnel-like tanks that make you feel as if you are strolling through the sea. Karato Market and Kamone Wharf are nearby, making it an ideal spot for a weekend family trip or date, combining sightseeing and gourmet food.
