ABOUT
About this spot
Standing on a small hill in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Xavier Memorial Church is dedicated to Francis Xavier, who first brought Christianity to Japan, and is a beautiful church rebuilt in 1998. The former church (built in 1952) was destroyed by fire in 1991, but the current building features a bold, modern design with two 53-meter towers, and its white walls set against the blue sky have made it a landmark of Yamaguchi City. Inside, light of rich colors streaming through beautiful stained glass creates an enchanting space, making it an ideal place to offer quiet prayers alone or to admire the architectural beauty. In the first-floor exhibition room (Christian Memorial Hall), valuable materials are on display that tell of Xavier's life, the history of the persecution of Christians, and missionary activity in Yamaguchi. Stopping by during your walk, you can leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and refresh body and mind in the pure air. Recommended for friends, couples, and history lovers, it is a classic must-see on any Yamaguchi trip.
