ABOUT
About this spot
Hagi Castle Town is an area with a deep history where the Edo-period town layout survives almost unchanged, and it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2015 as part of "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." The landscapes unique to castle towns of the time, such as white-walled namako-kabe and the "Kaimagari," streets bent at right angles to hinder enemy invasion, are still carefully preserved. Along the walking route are scattered the birthplaces of patriots who were active in the late Edo period, such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Kido Takayoshi, letting you feel up close the breath of the history you learned in textbooks. Between history visits, there are plenty of grown-up pleasures, such as taking a break at stylish cafes in renovated old houses or peeking into galleries of traditional "Hagi-yaki" pottery. Touring by rental bicycle, feeling the wind, is also recommended. It is a leading Yamaguchi sightseeing spot, ideal for relaxing in history alone or walking while taking photos with family and friends.
