ABOUT

About this spot

Located in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Motonosumi Inari Shrine is famous for its 123 vermilion torii gates that line the coast as if a dragon were rising toward the sea, making it one of Yamaguchi's most photogenic landmarks. Founded in 1955, the shrine is said to bring blessings for business prosperity, safety at sea, good relationships, and more. Its most distinctive feature is the offertory box said to be "the hardest in Japan to toss a coin into," found beyond the tunnel of torii gates. It is placed at the top of the large torii gate, about 5 meters above the ground, and legend has it that if you manage to throw a coin in, your wish will come true. From the shrine you can also see the "Ryugu no Shiofuki," where waves crash against the rock wall and spray high into the air, letting you feel the power of nature up close. It is a mystical power spot full of energy, ideal for a weekend drive, a girls' getaway, or a solo trip to refresh yourself. Be sure to see for yourself this one-of-a-kind view, woven together by the beautiful blue sea, steep cliffs, and vivid red torii gates.
