ABOUT

About this spot

Nanao Castle in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is the grand mountain castle of the Hatakeyama clan, who ruled Noto in the Warring States period. Counted among Japan's Five Great Mountain Castles, the ruins that boasted impregnability are carefully preserved as a Nationally Designated Historic Site today. It is also a spot full of historical romance, known for the poem "Kugatsu Jusan'ya" (The Thirteenth Night of the Ninth Month) said to have been composed by Uesugi Kenshin when he captured the castle. The top highlight is the magnificent stone walls built near the summit, about 300 meters above sea level. You can feel the advanced stone-stacking techniques of the time up close, which history fans will love. Standing at the site of the main enclosure, the view opens up, and a wonderful panoramic view spreads out overlooking Nanao Bay and Noto Island. It is also maintained as a nature-rich hiking course, and you can immerse yourself in history quietly alone, or walk enjoying the scenery with friends. Before climbing, stopping at the "Nanao Castle History Museum" at the foot of the mountain will help you better understand the castle's structure and history, making your stroll even more fulfilling.
