ABOUT

About this spot

The Higashi Chaya District in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is a sightseeing attraction whose charm lies in a beautiful streetscape strongly preserving the atmosphere of the Edo period. With old buildings with beautiful latticed facades (degoshi) lining both sides of the stone-paved road, you get the feeling of having traveled back in time. It is designated a nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and is highly popular as Kanazawa's signature photogenic spot. During the day, we recommend visiting the dignified teahouses, enjoying gorgeous sweets made with gold leaf, and shopping for refined Japanese goods. In particular, at the teahouse "Shima," designated an Important Cultural Property, you can see the luxurious interior that conveys the stylish culture of the time. At dusk the streetlights come on, and sometimes you can hear the sound of shamisen and drums from somewhere, giving the area a magical, subdued, adult atmosphere different from the daytime. It is ideal for a historical family exploration, a kimono stroll with friends, or spending a quiet, relaxed time alone. It is a classic sightseeing spot you should visit when in Kanazawa.
