ABOUT
About this spot
Standing among the temple district of Teramachi in the castle town of Kanazawa, Myoryuji is one of Japan's most popular spots, known as the "Ninja Temple." At first glance it looks like an ordinary two-story building, but inside it has a maze-like structure of four stories and seven levels, with 29 ingenious tricks built in. Surprising devices such as hidden staircases, trapdoors, and a seppuku room were created so that the Kaga Domain could use the temple as a fortress (a secondary castle) in an emergency, in preparation for an attack by the shogunate. Tours are by reservation only, and a guide carefully explains each device with demonstrations. Even adults will catch their breath at the wisdom and skill of the craftsmen of the time. It is a highly entertaining temple that history fans, friends, families, and solo travelers can all enjoy. When sightseeing in Kanazawa, be sure to make a reservation and experience this crystallization of strategy.
