ABOUT
About Shiga
The greatest attraction of Shiga Prefecture is "Lake Biwa," Japan's largest lake, which occupies about one-sixth of the prefecture's area. On its shores there are plenty of activities for enjoying rich nature with all five senses, such as cycling, camping, and cruising. The "Metasequoia Avenue," northwest of Lake Biwa, is also popular as a spot offering spectacular views throughout the year. In terms of history, important historic sites that shook the course of Japanese history are scattered about, including "Hikone Castle," a National Treasure that strongly preserves the atmosphere of the Warring States period, the "Azuchi Castle ruins" associated with Oda Nobunaga, and "Enryakuji on Mt. Hiei," a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. There are also many temples and shrines, so you can enjoy historical strolls in a calm atmosphere. Food culture is another highlight of sightseeing in Shiga. Flavors unique to the area await, such as steak of "Omi beef," one of Japan's three great wagyu, "funazushi," a traditional fermented food, and dishes made with fish from Lake Biwa. With good access from Kyoto, it is an ideal place for travelers who want to leave the bustle of the city and spend leisurely time.
