Iwamura Castle Ruins

Counted among Japan's Three Great Mountain Castles, these ruins stand on a steep site 713 m above sea level and tell the poignant tale of a "female castle lord." The spectacular stone walls are the highlight.

ABOUT

About this spot

Iwamura Castle, counted among Japan's Three Great Mountain Castles alongside Takatori Castle in Yamato and Matsuyama Castle in Bitchu, is a must-see for history fans. It is also known for the tragic story of Otsuya no Kata, the "female castle lord" and aunt of Oda Nobunaga, who protected her people as the de facto lord. The biggest highlight is the sturdy stone walls that cleverly use the terrain. In particular, the weighty stone wall on the north face of the main enclosure known as the "Rokudan-kabe" (Six-Tier Wall) was reinforced in the Edo period to prevent collapse, and its geometric beauty and power overwhelm visitors. Walk the stone-paved road from the castle town, and you can enjoy a stroll along an old path that conveys the atmosphere of the time. The rich nature that comes with the high elevation is another appeal: cherry blossoms in spring, deep green in summer, autumn foliage in fall and snowscapes in winter. It is a hidden gem ideal for solo trips steeped in historical romance or weekend drives to enjoy superb views while getting some exercise.
