ABOUT
About this spot
Nestled in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Gero Onsen is a historic hot spring renowned as one of Japan's "Three Famous Springs," alongside Kusatsu and Arima. Its greatest distinction is the "skin-beautifying waters" typical of simple alkaline springs. The smooth, silky feel, as if you were soaking in natural lotion, continues to captivate many visitors, especially women. The "Funsenchi" pool on the banks of the Hida River, which flows through the center of the hot spring town, is the symbol of Gero Onsen. It is now open as a foot bath, letting you enjoy the hot spring in an open-air setting. Free foot baths are scattered all over town, and the classic way to enjoy the area is "yumeguri," or hot-spring hopping, strolling around with local food and sweets in hand. If you want to experience hot springs more fully, we recommend the "Yumeguri Tegata" pass, sold for 2,500 yen. It lets you use the baths of up to three participating inns and enjoy each inn's prized open-air bath. At night the hot spring town is lit up, taking on a magical atmosphere different from the daytime. Whether for making family memories, a girls' trip with friends, or a solo trip as a treat for yourself, it is a special place to refresh both body and mind.
