ABOUT

About this spot

Hida Great Limestone Cave in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, is located at an altitude of 900 m, the highest of any tourist limestone cave in Japan. The average temperature inside the cave is about 12 degrees all year round, cool in summer and warm in winter, so you can enjoy a comfortable stroll in any season. The approximately 800 m cave is fantastically lit with LEDs, and the "Ryugu Night View," with its beautiful blue light, is a must-see photo spot. It also attracts academic attention for its many "helictites," very rare stalactites that hang down in twisting forms. The walkways are well maintained, but there are more stairs as you go deeper, so you can exit partway to suit your stamina. In addition, the adjacent "Ohashi Collection Museum" displays art treasures from around the world and gold bars collected by the cave's discoverer, so you can enjoy them together with the wonders of nature. The huge ice pillars of the "Ice Valley," seen only in winter, are also overwhelmingly powerful, making this a great sightseeing spot for family, friends, and loved ones.
