ABOUT
About this spot
Gujo Hachiman Castle, rising above Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, was built in the late Sengoku period, and its current keep is a historic castle reconstructed in wood in 1933, the first in Japan. It is said to be the oldest reconstructed wooden castle in Japan, and walking through the keep, you can feel the warmth of the wood and the craftsmanship of the artisans who rebuilt it. Its beauty in every season is exceptional: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green in early summer, and in autumn the castle is enveloped in such crimson foliage that it is described as "the keep is on fire." On winter mornings, the fantastical "Castle in the Sky" may appear, floating above a deep sea of fog, a sight that has captivated many photographers and tourists. From the keep at the summit, you can enjoy a grand panorama of the mountains of Oku-Mino and the castle town, said to be shaped like a fish. In the castle town are Sogi-sui, one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters, and atmospheric old streets, so a stroll combined with a castle visit is perfect for a weekend refresh. It is recommended for history lovers, as well as those who want to enjoy spectacular views with family and friends.
