ABOUT
About this spot
Takayama Old Town in Hida-Takayama, one of Gifu Prefecture's most popular destinations, offers atmospheric scenery as if you had traveled back to the Edo period. The area around Kami-Sannomachi, called "Sanmachi-dori," is especially lined with houses with black lattices, with the sound of water in the irrigation channels along the eaves ringing pleasantly. The real pleasure of strolling here is, above all, "street food." There are local treats galore, such as Hida beef nigiri sushi and "mitarashi dango" with the appetizing aroma of fragrant soy sauce. At local long-established sake breweries, you can also enjoy tasting delicious sake. For souvenir hunting, we recommend the variety shops selling traditional crafts and charming folk crafts. It is wonderful to walk with friends or family, or quietly alone feeling the breath of history. Another charm is the different faces it shows in each season: a fantastical scene wrapped in softly falling snow in winter, and the gorgeous atmosphere of the Takayama Festival in spring and autumn. In this town where every view is picturesque, why not spend a soothing time?
