ABOUT
About this spot
Magome-juku in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, is a historic spot that prospered as a post town on the Nakasendo road linking Edo and Kyoto. Known as a rare "post town on a slope" even by national standards, it has a beautiful stone-paved road that runs along a mountain ridge. It is also the birthplace of the literary giant Toson Shimazaki, and buildings that convey a sense of history, including the Toson Memorial Museum, built on the site of his family home, are preserved as they were. Along the slope stand teahouses selling the local specialties gohei-mochi and oyaki and shops selling folk crafts, so you can stroll leisurely while snacking and shopping. From the observation deck at the top of the post town, you can enjoy a panorama of majestic Mount Ena, and the views in harmony with the nature of each season are stunning. Whether you want to quietly immerse yourself in history alone or walk taking photos with friends, it is a place where you can forget everyday life and spend moments as if you had traveled back to the Edo period.
