ABOUT
About this spot
Takayama Jinya, one of the symbols of Hida-Takayama, is a government office established by the Edo shogunate to rule Hida as direct territory. Of the more than 60 regional governor and magistrate offices said to have once existed nationwide, Takayama is the only place where the main buildings remain as they were, and it is designated a National Historic Site. The spacious grounds hold many highlights, including the solemn "Oyakusho" (main office), the "Shirasu" (courtyard) conveying the interrogations of the time, and the "Okura," known as Japan's oldest and one of its largest storehouses. Do not miss the details, from the patterns on tatami edges to the craftsmanship of the nail covers. The quiet garden around the buildings shows its beauty in each season, letting you spend calm time away from everyday bustle. Every morning, the "Jinya-mae Morning Market" is held in front of the Jinya gate, selling local vegetables and crafts and making it a very popular sightseeing route. It is a spot where history lovers, families, girls' trips, and solo travelers alike can fully enjoy the feeling of traveling back to the Edo period.
