Toyama Prefecture Tateyama Museum

A vast "field museum" conveying the history and spiritual culture of Tateyama faith. In addition to the exhibition hall, there is much to see, including "Mandara Yuen," an art space where you can experience hell and paradise with all five senses.

ABOUT

About this spot

Tateyama, the sacred land symbolizing Toyama Prefecture. The "Tateyama Museum," located in Ashikuraji at its foot, is a hands-on "field museum" that goes beyond a mere exhibition facility. At the core of the museum is the "Exhibition Hall," where you can learn in depth about Tateyama's history and nature. But the true value of this museum extends outdoors. Particularly recommended is "Mandara Yuen," which expresses the world of the Tateyama Mandala with the five senses. Through artistic sculptures and sound and light staging, the worldview that continues from hell to paradise is recreated, offering an immersive experience as if you had wandered into another world. In recent years it has also drawn attention as a photogenic spot. Historical sites are also scattered about, such as the "Nunobashi" (Cloth Bridge), where women, once barred from Tateyama, prayed for salvation, and you can trace the footsteps of history in a solemn atmosphere. Whether quietly exploring history alone or strolling the mystical space with family and friends, it is recommended. If you stop by on your journey along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, you will feel even more of the spiritual depth of the mountain called Tateyama.
