ABOUT
About this spot
Zuiryuji Temple, in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, is a Soto Zen temple built by Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of the Kaga domain, to honor his older brother and benefactor, Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord. Completed over a period of about 20 years, its appearance speaks to the overwhelming wealth and authority of the Kaga domain at the time. Upon entering the grounds, the first thing that catches the eye is the perfectly symmetrical temple layout, in which the Soumon (main gate), Sanmon, Buddha Hall, and Dharma Hall stand in a straight line, connected by corridors on the left and right. Three buildings, the Sanmon, Buddha Hall, and Dharma Hall, are designated National Treasures as masterpieces of early modern temple architecture. In particular, the roof of the Buddha Hall is "lead-tiled" (namari-buki), which is rare even in Japan, and gives off a heavy, beautiful glow. The tranquil space, enveloped in history and architectural beauty, is perfect for adults traveling alone or for calm sightseeing with friends. Limited-time illumination events, with dreamy projection mapping and more, are also held in winter and spring. Once you step inside, you can spend a quiet moment away from everyday life.
