ABOUT
About this spot
Kurobe Dam, the highlight of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route that spans Toyama and Nagano Prefectures, is Japan's tallest dam at 186 meters. Born of a grueling construction effort hailed as the "project of the century" during Japan's postwar high-growth era, this colossal structure continues to overwhelm visitors today. The top attraction is the "tourist discharge," held each year from late June to mid-October. Over 10 tons of water per second burst out as a spray, a spectacular sight, and with luck you may even see a beautiful rainbow. From the observation deck, reached by climbing 220 steps, you can take in a grand panorama of emerald-green Lake Kurobe and the peaks of the Northern Alps. After your walk, the classic treat is the famous "Kurobe Dam Curry." It suits families and groups of friends, and equally solo travelers who want to enjoy the superb scenery in peace. It is one of Japan's must-see landmarks, where the wonders of nature and human ingenuity come together.
