Mentai Park Oarai, in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a free hands-on theme park run by Kanefuku, a long-established mentaiko maker. Inside the facility is a "Factory Gallery" where you can watch the process of making mentaiko up close, and learn in a fun way about the care that goes into everything from sourcing ingredients to the finished product. The main attraction is the "made-that-day" mentaiko served at the attached direct sales shop. Mentaiko that is shipped without ever being frozen has a distinctive popping texture and freshness you find only here. At the food court, mentaiko-packed gourmet items you can enjoy only here, such as the "jumbo onigiri" and "mentai soft serve ice cream," are also popular. Being an indoor facility, it is unaffected by weather and is a classic Ibaraki sightseeing spot for the whole family, from children to adults. Located right next to Oarai Port, it is also ideal for a stop between other sightseeing in the area.
