ABOUT
About this spot
Kairaku-en in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's Three Great Gardens with a long history, created in 1842 (Tenpo 13) by Tokugawa Nariaki, the ninth lord of the Mito domain. Its name reflects Nariaki's spirit of "enjoying together with the people," and it has long been loved by the public. About 3,000 plum trees of around 100 varieties are planted on the spacious grounds, and during the "Mito Plum Festival" in early spring the garden is filled with a lovely fragrance. Besides the plum, you can enjoy Japan's four seasons with all five senses throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, deep greenery in summer, autumn foliage and snowscapes in winter. One of the highlights, the "Kobuntei," is an elegant building designed by Nariaki himself, and the panoramic view from it of Lake Senba and the Tazuru-nai plum grove is spectacular. The garden also has a dense moso bamboo grove and a quiet cedar forest, making it perfect for a peaceful stroll away from the bustle. With family or friends, or as a refreshing holiday alone, please experience this superb space where history and nature are in harmony.
