Mito Castle

The residence of the Mito Tokugawa family, one of the three branch houses of the Tokugawa. Full of the appeal of an "earthen castle," with some of Japan's largest earthen ramparts and dry moats.

ABOUT

About this spot

Mito Castle is a historic fortress best known as the seat of the Mito Tokugawa family, one of the three branches of the Tokugawa clan. Unlike typical castles that make heavy use of stone walls, it is an "earthen castle" skillfully laid out with large earthworks and dry moats, and the scale of its defensive lines is among the largest in Japan. In 2020, the Otemon, the largest gate in the castle, was faithfully reconstructed using period construction methods, followed the next year by the Ninomaru Corner Turret, letting you get up close to the castle's former grandeur. The corner turret, with its beautiful white plaster walls, is cherished as a new landmark of Mito. Around the castle ruins stand Kodokan, one of Japan's largest domain schools, and other historic school buildings, making this an ideal area for a cultural stroll. With excellent access from the station, it is recommended for history lovers, for those who want an easy weekend walk, and for families on educational trips.
