ABOUT
About this spot
Fukuroda Falls, a leading sightseeing spot in Ibaraki Prefecture, is counted among Japan's Three Famous Waterfalls, along with Kegon Falls in Tochigi and Nachi Falls in Wakayama. Because the water cascades down a great rock face in four stages, it is also called "Yodo no Taki" (Four-Stage Falls). It is said that when the priest Saigyo visited, he praised it, saying that one must come once in each of the four seasons to truly appreciate its charm, and its dramatic seasonal changes remain its greatest appeal. The falls are wrapped in fresh greenery in spring, cooled by breezes in summer, framed by vivid autumn leaves on the rock face in autumn, and in winter the entire waterfall may freeze into a mystical "hyobaku" (frozen waterfall). In winter, night illuminations are also held, showing a dreamy side different from daytime. Walking through the "Fukuroda Falls Tunnel," the viewing facility, you can see the falls up close from the first and second viewing platforms, or look down from the top, with the roar and spray of the water overwhelming. The area has many restaurants serving local specialties such as "salt-grilled sweetfish" and "Okukuji shamo" chicken, making it ideal for weekend drives, family trips, or refreshing time with friends.
