ABOUT

About this spot

Kodokan in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest feudal domain schools, opened as the educational center of the Mito Domain in the turbulent late Edo period. Founded by the 9th lord, Tokugawa Nariaki, under the principle of the unity of letters and arms, it is also where Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun, studied as a child. The main gate and main hall, designated Important Cultural Properties, retain much of their original appearance, and along with their imposing architecture you can feel the samurai's passion for learning and martial arts. Bullet holes left in the pillars are precious testimony conveying the upheaval of the late Edo period. Kodokan is also very famous as a plum blossom spot. About 800 plum trees of around 60 varieties are planted on the grounds, and in early spring the rich fragrance drifts through the air and soothes visitors. Combining your visit with the neighboring Mito Castle ruins, or going a little farther to Kairakuen Garden, is a recommended course. It is perfect for history lovers, solo travelers wanting to reflect in a quiet setting, and families who want to learn about Japanese culture on a day off. As a landmark of Mito, it offers a rich historical experience.
