ABOUT
About this spot
Kashima Jingu Shrine in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is the head shrine of about 600 Kashima shrines across Japan and one of the oldest shrines in the country. It enshrines Takemikazuchi no Okami, the deity of martial arts, and since ancient times has drawn deep devotion from samurai and commoners alike as a power spot for success in contests and good fortune. Walking through the vast grounds, you are first greeted by the vivid vermilion "Romon" gate, counted among Japan's Three Great Romon. Farther in lies the mystical "Oku-sando" approach lined with giant trees, wrapped in quiet air that makes you forget the bustle of the city. There is plenty to see, including the "Kaname-ishi" stone, said by legend to hold down earthquakes, and the crystal-clear "Mitarashi Pond," which gushes more than 400,000 liters of spring water a day. It is ideal for weekend strolls, solo trips, or family visits, a special place where you can refresh body and mind while feeling history and mystery amid abundant nature.
