ABOUT
About this spot
Lake Kasumigaura, the symbol of Ibaraki Prefecture, is the second-largest lake in Japan by area. Loved as a spectacular, wide-open spot perfect for a weekend refresh, it offers sweeping views in every direction. Its signature "hobiki-bune" are sailing boats using a traditional fishing method that dates back to the Meiji era. The sight of their pure-white sails billowing in the wind evokes a nostalgia unique to Kasumigaura. During the fishing season from summer to autumn, you can photograph their graceful forms up close from an accompanying sightseeing boat. For those who want to be active, we recommend cycling the "Tsukuba-Kasumigaura Rinrin Road." The flat, easy-to-ride course offers seasonal flowers and majestic views of Mt. Tsukuba across the lake. The lake is also revered as a mecca for bass fishing, drawing anglers from all over the country. The surrounding area has roadside stations and parks, making it ideal for family picnics, drives, or quiet solo walks. At dusk the water glows golden, offering a soothing moment. Why not leave the city bustle behind and be embraced by the vast sky and lake?
