ABOUT
About this spot
This lighthouse standing at Cape Shiriya, at the northeastern end of the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, is a representative brick-built Western-style lighthouse in Japan, first lit in 1876. For its historical and cultural value it is designated a nationally Important Cultural Property, and its white form against the blue sky and sea has been selected as one of Japan's 50 Lighthouses. The main highlight is the sight of the Kandachime horses relaxing in the grassland around the lighthouse. These horses, with the strength to endure the severe winter cold, graze in an unobstructed natural setting, a scene with an atmosphere that feels not like Japan. The interior of the lighthouse is open to visitors, and the observation deck at the top of the 128-step spiral staircase offers a grand panorama where the Tsugaru Strait and the Pacific meet. It is an ideal spot for an adult trip or a drive, where you can fully enjoy the openness of the farthest reaches in the sea breeze.
