ABOUT
About this spot
The Sannai-Maruyama Site in Aomori City is one of Japan's largest Jomon settlement sites, where people lived continuously for 1,700 years starting about 5,900 years ago. In 2021 it was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan," and it has become a popular spot visited by many tourists, not only history fans. Within the vast grounds, the "large post-hole building," about 15 meters tall and believed to be a symbol of the time, and the "large pit dwelling," over 32 meters long, have been faithfully restored. You can actually enter the buildings and feel the grand scale of the Jomon period. The adjacent "Sanmaru Museum" displays about 1,700 excavated items, including National Treasures. The elaborate clay figurines and beautiful lacquerware convey the Jomon people's high technical skill and rich spiritual culture. With free guided tours by volunteer guides also available, families, friends and solo travelers alike can enjoy a leisurely stroll while satisfying their intellectual curiosity. Why not travel through eternal time, feeling the Jomon wind?
