ABOUT

About this spot

Sukayu Onsen, one of Aomori's most famous hot springs, is a historic hot spring inn located at an elevation of about 900 meters in the embrace of the Hakkoda mountain range. In 1954, in recognition of its excellent hot spring benefits and environment, it was designated the first "National Recreational Hot Spring Resort" in Japan. The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the famous "Hiba Sennin-buro" (Thousand-Person Bath). In a vast 160-tatami-mat space, different sources and baths line up, including Netsu-no-yu (hot water), Shibu-roku-bu, Nuru-no-yu (cool water), and Yu-daki (waterfall), and you will be captivated by the overwhelming architectural beauty of the all-hiba structure with not a single pillar. It is basically a mixed bath, but women-only times are set aside in the morning and afternoon, so even first-time visitors can enjoy the traditional baths with peace of mind. There is also the separate-gender small bath "Tama-no-yu," which you can casually drop into. In winter, the area is known as a heavy-snow region with some of the world's greatest snowfall, and the scene of a rustic single inn standing in the snow is truly enchanting. You can be soothed by the rich nature of Hakkoda through the four seasons: fresh greenery in spring, cool summers, and vivid autumn foliage. After trekking in the area, the time spent detoxing in the strongly acidic sulfur waters will be a blissful moment that makes you forget everyday life. Be sure to visit, whether with friends, family, or alone for a quiet hot-spring-cure experience.
