ABOUT

About this spot

Lake Towada is a double caldera lake located on a mountain at an elevation of 400 meters, straddling Aomori and Akita Prefectures. Formed by volcanic activity that began about 200,000 years ago, it has a maximum depth of 327 meters, the third deepest in Japan. Its deep, clear indigo water, together with the surrounding outer rim mountains, creates the landscape that symbolizes Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Around Yasumiya, the center of sightseeing, you can enjoy a stroll through history and culture, with the "Statue of Maidens" that was Takamura Kotaro's final work and Towada Shrine, long revered as a sacred site of Shugendo mountain asceticism. For a more active experience, a sightseeing boat is recommended. From the lake you can see up close sheer cliffs, strange rocks such as "Goshiki-iwa," and beautiful islands colored by the seasons. The lake shows a different appeal all year round: fresh greenery in spring, a cool retreat in summer, fiery autumn foliage, and quiet snowy scenery in winter. Driving or walking together with the adjacent Oirase Stream is also popular, making this an ideal destination for anyone from solo travelers to families who want to forget everyday life and refresh.
