ABOUT
About this spot
Hirosaki Castle in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, is an extremely rare historic site in Japan, with a castle keep built in the Edo period that still stands today. Once the seat of the Tsugaru clan of the Hirosaki domain, it is now beloved by residents and visitors alike as Hirosaki Park. The greatest attraction is, above all, its rich expressions through the four seasons. In spring, about 2,600 cherry trees bloom, and the moat turning pink with floating petals, known as "hanaikada" (blossom rafts), is world-famous as a once-in-a-lifetime sight. In addition, the keep, which had been moved within the main citadel for stone wall repairs, was returned to its original stone wall in 2026 in a "hikimodoshi" (pull-back) operation following completion of the work, marking a historic milestone. It has something for everyone: history lovers, solo travelers with a camera in hand, families who want to stroll leisurely across the vast grounds, and couples who want to enjoy romantic night cherry blossoms. In winter, the Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival is held, offering a magical illuminated snowscape. Please be sure to visit, together with a walk through the castle town of Hirosaki, which retains its old-town charm.
