ABOUT
About this spot
Straddling Aomori and Akita Prefectures, "Shirakami-Sanchi" is a vast mountain area that in 1993 became the first site in Japan to be registered as a World Natural Heritage Site. It preserves one of the world's largest primeval beech forests, almost untouched by human hands, and is truly worthy of the name "living forest museum." The highlight of a visit is a tour of the "Juniko" (Twelve Lakes), including the mystical cobalt-blue "Aoike" (Blue Pond). Especially in the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, the colors of the trees reflected on the lake surface are breathtakingly beautiful. On the trekking course to the "Ammon Falls," you can refresh body and mind while feeling the sound of abundant water and sunlight filtering through the beech trees. With everything from beginner-friendly walking trails to full-fledged mountain climbing routes, it can be enjoyed by a wide range of visitors, from solo travelers who want to face nature quietly to those who want to spend an active time with family and friends. Please come and feel on your skin the overwhelming energy woven by untouched nature.
