ABOUT

About this spot

Nejo is a castle ruin of exceptionally high historical value, built in 1334 (the first year of Kenmu) by Nanbu Moroyuki. Unlike typical castles with stone walls and a keep, it preserves the form of a medieval "hirajiro" (castle on flat ground), and it has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles. Within the vast grounds, a nationally designated historic site, are the "Main Hall," faithfully reconstructed on the basis of excavation research, along with barns, workshops, stables, and more. The reproduced displays inside the Main Hall are especially impressive: life-size figures recreate the New Year's ceremonies of the time, giving you the feeling of having traveled back to the Warring States period. The surroundings have been developed as a lush park, and you can stroll while enjoying nature through the seasons, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. It is a perfect spot for history fans, for educational family trips, and for solo travelers who want a calm walk. *The neighboring Hachinohe City Museum is closed for renovation work (scheduled until June of Reiwa 9, i.e., 2027).
