ABOUT
About this spot
This museum introduces in detail the history of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the activities of minesweepers and submarines. As its nickname "Tetsu no Kujira-kan" (Iron Whale Museum) suggests, the main attraction is the outdoor display of the real submarine "Akishio." The 76-meter-long hull resting on land is stunning and makes it a representative photo spot of Kure. Inside, you can enter the real submarine, try the helm and periscope, and see up close the living conditions of the crew in cramped quarters, for a realistic experience. The museum also explains in an easy-to-understand way, with plenty of materials, the history and technology of the minesweeping forces that have kept Japan's coastal waters safe in the postwar era. It is rare nationwide to find a facility offering such rich content with free admission. History and military fans, families, couples, and solo travelers can all enjoy it fully. Visiting together with the adjacent Yamato Museum is the classic Kure sightseeing route.
