ABOUT

About this spot

The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art is located in Hijiyama Park in Minami Ward, Hiroshima. It opened on May 3, 1989, and is described as the first public museum in Japan to take on contemporary art in earnest. It collects and shows mainly art made after World War II, with special exhibitions and collection exhibitions. The building was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa. To blend in with the natural scenery of Hijiyama, more than 60 percent of it is buried underground, with two floors below ground and two above. A postwar-modern work with an approach plaza and triangular roofs, it won the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 1990. The collection includes Henry Moore's Arch, Andy Warhol's Marilyn and Yayoi Kusama's work, along with pieces by younger artists. There is also a cafe and shop. The museum closed for full renovation in December 2020 and reopened on March 18, 2023. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for the exhibitions, or half a day with the park.
