ABOUT
About this spot
Yoshida-Koriyama Castle in Akitakata City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is the ruins of a mountain castle that was the residence of the Sengoku-era hero Mori Motonari, and one of the largest in western Japan. The entire Koriyama mountain, about 400 meters high, was fortified, with more than 270 terraces (kuruwa) laid out across it. The top highlight for history fans is the Mori Motonari Grave site at the foot of the mountain. Standing in a solemn atmosphere, the graveyard conveys the dignity of a Sengoku warlord to this day. A well-maintained hiking course leads to the site of the main keep at the summit, so you can enjoy exploring the castle while feeling the rich nature around you. The stone walls, dry moats, and other remains found throughout are precious historic sites that let you witness the advanced castle-building techniques of the time. At the Akitakata City History and Folklore Museum at the foot of the mountain, you can learn in detail about the history of the Mori clan and the structure of the castle, and stopping by before the climb will deepen your appreciation of the history. With cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, the scenery is beautiful in every season, making it a recommended spot for weekend history walks and serious castle touring.
