ABOUT
About this spot
Fukuyama Castle is the symbol of Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture. Its greatest charm is its location right next to the station: the castle keep can be seen from the platforms of JR Fukuyama Station, a rarity even across Japan. Built by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the castle marked its 400th anniversary in 2022 and underwent a major renewal. The top highlight is the restored iron plating on the north wall, originally added to withstand cannon fire. Said to be the only design of its kind in Japan, the dark, imposing wall is a truly stunning sight. Inside, the exhibits have been reborn with the latest digital technology, and there is plenty of hands-on content that makes learning about history fun. From the top floor of the keep you can take in the whole of Fukuyama's cityscape, enjoying panoramic views as a pleasant breeze drifts by. In spring the castle is also a well-known cherry blossom spot, perfect for a stroll with family or friends, or for solo travelers who want to quietly immerse themselves in history. In the evening it is illuminated, revealing a magical side quite different from its daytime look. If you are sightseeing in Fukuyama, this classic spot is the one to visit first.
