ABOUT
About this spot
In the heart of Hiroshima, Hiroshima Castle was built in 1589 by Mori Terumoto. It was once designated a National Treasure, but was burned to the ground in the atomic bombing; the present main keep is an exterior reconstruction completed in 1958. The main keep closed in March 2026 due to concrete deterioration and aging facilities, but its exterior can still be admired. You can also visit the restored buildings of the Ninomaru (Second Compound), which are free to enter. The moat surrounding the castle has been developed into a walking path and is a beloved cherry blossom spot in spring. Whether you want to spend a quiet weekend alone reflecting on history, or stroll the grounds with family and friends and take commemorative photos, it is a fine choice. Easily reached from Hiroshima Station, this is one of Hiroshima's signature sights, best paired with a visit to Peace Memorial Park.
