Senko-ji Temple

A famous temple on Mt. Ohoza, the symbol of Onomichi. The view of the Onomichi Channel and the island-dotted Seto Inland Sea from the vermilion main hall is truly spectacular.

ABOUT

About this spot

Senko-ji Temple, a symbol of Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, is a historic temple said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi in 806. The vividly vermilion main hall on the mountainside, known as "Akado" (the Red Hall), offers a view of Onomichi's townscape and the island-dotted Seto Inland Sea that is simply breathtaking. It is a classic spot that almost every visitor to Onomichi stops by. For a weekend trip, we recommend riding the ropeway from the foot of the mountain and enjoying an aerial stroll on your way up. Giant, strange rocks such as "Tama-no-Iwa" are scattered throughout the grounds, where you can feel a mystical power. The temple is also known for blessings for passing exams and for finding a match, and attracts many worshippers. On the way back, a popular route is to walk slowly down the "Path of Literature," dotted with monuments associated with literary figures such as Naoya Shiga and Fumiko Hayashi. In spring the cherry blossoms, selected among Japan's "100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots," and in autumn the beautiful foliage color the grounds. Whether on a date as a couple, a girls' trip with friends, or when you want to quietly gaze at the view alone, it is a place to enjoy a soothing, special time in any situation.
