ABOUT
About this spot
The Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yokai Museum, nicknamed the Miyoshi Mononoke Museum, is a municipal museum in Miyoshi-cho, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, dedicated to yokai (supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore). It opened on April 26, 2019, and is said to be the first public museum in Japan to focus on yokai. Most of the displays come from about 5,000 items collected by the yokai researcher Koichi Yumoto and donated to the city in December 2016. The museum was also founded because Miyoshi is the setting of the Edo-period yokai tale Inou Mononoke Roku. The official website describes themed exhibitions based on the collection, as well as displays of books and picture scrolls on the tale's real-life protagonist and its background. The two-story steel building stands on the site of the former Miyoshi City Cultural Hall, next to the Miyoshi culture and tourism exchange center. It has exhibition rooms, a museum shop and a reception on the first floor. Hours are 9:30-17:00 (last entry 16:30), and it is closed on Wednesdays and at year-end and New Year. Please check the official website for current exhibitions.
