Okunoshima Island

The "Rabbit Island" floating in the Seto Inland Sea is a healing paradise where you can meet about 600 wild rabbits. A museum recounts the island's past as a poison gas factory, making it a place to learn the value of peace as well.

ABOUT

About this spot

Okunoshima, off the coast of Takehara in Hiroshima Prefecture, is a tranquil island about 4 km around. It was once erased from maps as a military secret, a "poison gas production island," but today it is designated a national park and beloved as a peaceful "healing island" home to some 600 wild rabbits. The biggest draw is that the adorable rabbits come running as soon as you arrive. You can feed them (bringing food is recommended) and take photos, forgetting everyday life as you enjoy a heartwarming time. The island also preserves ruins of a power plant and poison gas storage facilities from that era, and together with the museum they offer deep lessons from history. At the lodging facility Kyukamura Okunoshima, you can enjoy hot springs and fresh Seto Inland Sea seafood. Cycling around the island on a rental bicycle is popular, as are swimming and camping in summer. Whether you come with family or friends, or on your own, it is a perfect spot for a special holiday surrounded by nature and rabbits.
