ABOUT
About this spot
Hakuto Shrine in Tottori City is a shrine rich in history and romance, where the legend of the myth "The White Rabbit of Inaba," Japan's oldest, lives on. It enshrines the white rabbit who helped bring about the marriage of Okuninushi and Princess Yakami, and as the birthplace of Japan's first love story it has even been certified as a "Sacred Place for Lovers." Along the approach to the grounds, stone rabbit statues with a variety of expressions and poses line the path and give visitors a warm welcome. A popular activity for worshippers is the "Musubi-ishi" (bonding stones): placing a stone on a rabbit statue or tossing it onto the torii gate while making a wish is a pleasure unique to this place. The "Mitarashi Pond," where the rabbit is said to have washed its wounds, is also known as a mysterious pond whose water level never changes regardless of the season. The beautiful Hakuto Coast stretches out right in front of the shrine, and the adjacent roadside station offers specialty products and souvenirs. Whether you want to immerse yourself in history on a solo trip or pray for a good match with friends or someone special, this is a classic spot not to be missed on a Tottori trip.
