ABOUT

About this spot

At the foot of Mt. Hisamatsu in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, Jinpukaku is a beautiful Western-style mansion in the French Renaissance style, built in 1907 as the villa of Marquis Ikeda Nakahiro, the former lord of the Tottori domain. Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, its contrast of white walls and red roof blends beautifully with the surrounding Japanese garden and castle ruins. The highlight inside is the spiral staircase, which has no supporting pillar at all. The beauty of its curves, which condenses the advanced skill of its craftsmen, is breathtaking. It is also famous as a filming location for the film Rurouni Kenshin, making it a must-see for movie fans. The main building is currently closed for an extended period for major preservation and repair work (reopening is planned for fiscal year Reiwa 11), but the garden remains open to visitors. Exhibits and special openings unique to the construction period may also be held. With its architectural beauty evoking the romance of the Meiji era and a quiet space steeped in history, it is ideal for solo travelers, couples, and family strolls. Be sure to visit together with the Tottori Castle ruins and feel the breath of history.
